How To Tie A Mini Chubby Chernobyl
Fly Tying Video
Love it… Or Hate it…. Everyone has heard of the Chubby Chernobyl. It seems that it’s the official fly of guides in Montana. Some guys roll with it and have no shame… Some throw it and say they don’t and some will never admit to using it… Kind of like the San Juan Worm? No matter what you think of the Chubby Chernobyl it works! Fish like to eat it, It’s easy to see, floats a good amount of weight and is a good looking bug.
How do I feel about the Chubby Chernobyl? I used to hate it but I have to admit that now I love it! I like to tie them different than the store bought flies. I tie it a bit slimmer, smaller and use different colors.

Tying a Mini Chubby Chernobyl is pretty straight forward. A few tricks will make tying a Chubby Chernobyl much easier…
1 – Body Cutters make tying the Chubby much easier. Not all body cutters are the same though… They have to be sharp! There is nothing worse than a dull pair of cutters when tying to stamp out bodies for you flies. I’m a big fan of River Road Creations, Sharp and durable! Rive Road Creations has a lot of body styles to choose from but I end up using the tapered Chernobyl Body Cutter the most.
2 – Thread, I like a unwaxed tying thread for tying with foam. The thread lays nice and flat and has less of a tendency for cutting the foam body in half.
3 – Wing – MFC Widow’s Web is some of the best wing and post material available. Grab some at your local shop and I bet you’ll love it. From Chubbies to Parachute Adams…
4 Hooks – When tying Chubby Chernobyls in smaller sizes hook gap is very important. The smaller the fly the smaller the hook gap…. Till Yellowstone Fly Goods came out with their Kumoto Wide Gap Dry Fly Hook! These hooks are awesome! Short shank, wide gap, nickle black finish, micro barb and strong! It’s my new favorite hook to tie on!
Love it or hate to love it… The Chubby Chernobyl is here to stay! And the worm too!
