Fire Hole Sticks… You’ve probably seen them on social media, heard some chatter or maybe seen them on some online shops. Maybe you’ve seen some flies someone tied on them? What’s the story with Firehole Sticks?
Well… I found some at Fly Fish Food when I was driving through Utah and picked up a pack to check out. First impressions… Stout hook shanks, nickel black finish, great looking hook eye, barbless with great hook gaps finished with wicked sharp hook points. How do they tie? Great! The smooth finish feels great when laying a base of thread, shank lengths seem spot on and it seems the hooks might be a bit stronger than most as they seemed to take a bit more force to bend out. I have only tied on the 419 hook which is a dry fly hook, 2X hook gap and light wire. I’m definitely going to get some more hooks to use for the upcoming guide season.
What really got my attention is the super sharp hook point. Firehole Sticks are super sharp and very grabby. Without the barb and the long sleek retention point Firehole Sticks look like they would penetrate sooooo easy and might improve hook up ratios.
I’ve been wanting to switch to barbless hooks for a bit now. As we all know losing fish with barbless hooks is a common thing no big deal to me but when it’s time to work loosing fish is a real bummer. So for years I’ve relied on a micro barb hook that i modify a bit by making it a micro-micro barb(pretty micro) but still i would like to go completely barbless. So the retention point on these hooks really caught my eye. So this year I am going to give these hooks a solid try and hopefully go completely barbless with my flies.
